Day 20 - Gallup to Holbrook

July 20, 2015  •  2 Comments

Today definitely had a theme and that was big scenery and wigwams.

Along 66 there were many trading posts (gift shops) ran by Native Americans and to attract tourists they often had fake wigwams like the one above.

This is a close up of a bridge support rail from the 1920s over a river we crossed. This one was painted so was in better condition than others we had seen.

Arizona is probably the worst for 66 purists like us. We like to drive as much of the original Route 66 as possible but quite often we have found that Arizona simply shut off the road. The road above led to...

... a closed road sign and a barbed wire fence, which lead to...

... this dirt road, which got progressively worse for our soft roader but with skills learnt from West Sussex potholes we managed to make our way back to the main road.

In the afternoon we visited a National Park called the Petrified Forest National Park. The first part of this park was called the 'Painted Desert' as it had many different layers of rocks with different colours.

As you may have noticed there have been many dramatic skies in Arizona and there also seemed to be lots of ravens in the National Park. Tom managed to take this photo of one sitting on an information board and thought it suited black and white.

After the Painted Desert the park had about 18 miles of trails that led through the Petrified Forest as shown in this picture.

I tried to get this piece in the back of the car but the park ranger told me that no pieces of petrified wood could be taken home (I didn't really). Our accommodation for the night was a wigwam. It was made of concrete and with it's two small windows it felt like a bunker inside.
