Day 17 - Tucumcari to Santa Fe

July 17, 2015  •  1 Comment

Compared to other days the weather was a bit overcast and cooler. The drive was about 140 miles long and did not have as much stuff to stop and look at as other days but was still a fun drive.

This is the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa. It is 24 metres in diameter, 40 metres deep and it's water is a constant 18 degrees celsius. It has been a popular place for people travelling Route 66 to stop and cool off. Today when we visited there were a few local people swimming and there was some scuba diving training going on.

We travelled on the Santa Fe Trail over a mountain range, which is the highest point on Route 66. Most of the countryside looked like the picture above and it did not seem to be used for anything as it was too mountainous and rocky.

This style of building can be seen throughout Santa Fe and is not something we've seen on Route 66 or elsewhere in America. Santa Fe is the capital city of New Mexico and was founded in 1610, which makes it the oldest capital city in the US.

Santa Fe is a popular destination for tourists because of its architecture and the abundance of arts and crafts that are available throughout the city. As it was a Friday afternoon the roads around the square were closed to public and local car enthusiasts came to display their vintage cars while a band played in the square. It felt very much like a holiday atmosphere and both the locals and tourists were enjoying themselves.
