Day 11 - Carthage to Tulsa

July 11, 2015  •  2 Comments

Today was a leisurely 150 mile drive on Route 66. We passed through three states on our drive today: Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.

One of the best places we've stopped at so far for photos was Red Oak II in Carthage. It is a 1930s American town that was bought and then moved to a new plot of land where all of the buildings were restored and maintained to a high level.

The light was perfect for photos today and there were literally hundreds of unique things to take pictures of.

We briefly entered Kansas today.

This small stretch of road led to a rainbow bridge, which is named because its arched supports look like rainbows.

We also met lots of interesting people. A man called Eugene Waylan bought the Ku-Ku hamburger restaurant in 1973 and has been cooking burgers there ever since, he even cooked our burgers today. It's called the Ku-Ku after the numerous cuckoo clocks dotted around the restaurant.

We also met Dean Walker who owns a small convenience store on Route 66. He was used as part of the inspiration for Tow Mater in the film Cars. We bought a couple of ice creams from him and the animators of Cars have caught his characteristics brilliantly.

A slight detour off the route took us to Darryl Starbird Hot Rod Museum. It contained many of his unique creations including his bubble top 'Predicta' show car shown above, which is steered by moving a lever in the centre of the car back and forth.

The Blue Whale is one of the more famous road side attractions on Route 66. It was built as a slide and launch pad to jump into the pond. The water looked a bit green today though so we didn't have a go.
