Day 14 - Oklahoma City to Elk CityOur drive today was short compared to other days, it was 120 miles. The roads were mainly original concrete laid Route 66 and they were extremely long and stretched beyond the horizon. The towns we passed through were either farming towns or oil towns. As you can see not only were they long and straight but we were the only people on them as the interstate ran parallel about a quarter of a mile a way.
The most interesting thing we did today was visit the Stafford Air & Space Museum. It was setup by Thomas Stafford, a NASA astronaut, who flew two Gemini space missions and was the commander of a mission to the Moon on Apollo 10.
We spent a couple of hours here as there were exhibits of planes from the US Air Force, memorabilia from space missions Stafford was on and large portions of space rockets from that era.
This is one of the better motel signs we saw today. The sign was better than the actual motel, which looked like a place just for down and outs. We finished the day off by visiting a fantastic 66 museum that told the story of the road from its creation to its demise. One interesting fact that we learnt was that in the '40s people had to stop every 70 miles to refuel and our modern hire car needs refuelling every 400 miles. Comments
